Biography and Contribution to Sociology
Dhurjati Prasad Mukerji (1894–1961), popularly known as DP, was a founding father of sociology in India. He was born on 5 October 1894 in West Bengal into a middle-class Bengali family with a long tradition of intellectual pursuits.
- Education: After passing the entrance examination at Calcutta University, he initially wanted to study the sciences (like his peer, the famous physicist Satyen Bose). However, he settled for economics, history, and political science, eventually earning MAs in economics and history. The outbreak of the First World War prevented him from proceeding to England for further studies.
- Academic Career:
- Began his career at Bangabasi College, Calcutta.
- Joined the newly founded Lucknow University in 1922 as a lecturer in economics and sociology, brought there by Radhakamal Mukerjee (the department's first professor).
- Stayed at Lucknow for 32 years, retiring as Professor and Head of the Department in 1954.
- Served as a Visiting Professor of Sociology at the International Institute of Social Studies, The Hague for one year (1953).
- Occupied the Chair of Economics at the University of Aligarh with great distinction during his last 5 years of active academic life.
- Leadership: He was the first President of the Indian Sociological Conference and served as the Vice-President of the International Sociological Association.
- Versatility: His interests spanned economics, literature, music, art, and sociology. He was a Marxist who analyzed Indian society from the Marxian perspective of dialectical materialism.
