PIONEERS OF INDIAN SOCIOLOGY

Introduction: Emergence of Sociology in India

  • Sociology and social anthropology were born in the West in the 19th century and were brought to India from outside, particularly from Britain.
  • The disciplines were developed in India by British scholars living in India and Indian scholars trained in Britain and the U.S.A.
  • 1919: Sociology was recognised as an independent academic discipline in India when a separate department of sociology and civics was started under the guidance of Patrick Geddes at Bombay University.
  • Simultaneously, A.R. Wadia took the initiative to introduce sociology at the B.A. level at Mysore University in Karnataka.
  • Western scholars contributing to early Indian sociology: Verrier Elvin, Herbert Risley, Hutton, Nesfield, B.S. Cohn, Kathleen Gough, Sir Henry Maine, David Pocock, Charles Metcalf, Mackim Marrior.
  • Indian pioneer scholars: Radhakamal Mukherji, G.S. Ghurye, B.N. Seal, D.P. Mukherji, B.K. Sarkar, D.N. Majumdar, K.P. Chattopadhyaya, M.N. Srinivas, Iravathi Karve, K.M. Kapadia, A.R. Desai, S.C. Dube, M.S.A. Rao. This chapter gives profiles of a few eminent sociologists, who can be reasonably called "the pioneers of Indian sociology."
